Effect of Food Reductions on Territorial Behavior of Purple-throated Caribs

چکیده
We experimentally reduced the number of flowers of two species of Heliconia (H. caribaea and H. bihai) by 50% on territories defended by male Purple-throated Caribs (Eulampis jugularis). Following reductions, males decreased the amount of time they spent feeding on their territories and lost a significant amount of weight, but increased their time feeding and regained weight to premanipulation levels following restoration of flower abundance. Territorial males also spent less time in defense following flower reductions, in part by reducing the durations of chases of female intruders. Significantly fewer females intruded onto male territories following reductions in only 1 of 3 years; in all 3 years, significantly more females intruded onto the more rewarding H. caribaea territories, which offered a greater number of flowers per inflorescence than H. bihai territories.

Territorial Fidelity to Nectar Sources by Purple-throated Caribs, Eulampis Jugularis
—We present the first record of territorial site-fidelity across multiple years by Purple-throated Caribs (Eulampis jugularis) on three different islands in the eastern Caribbean: St. Kitts, Dominica, and St. Vincent. Marked male Purple-throated Caribs were monitored throughout the flowering season of their main nectar resources, Heliconia caribaea (St. Kitts and Dominica) and H. bihai (St. Vin...
متن کاملPollinator Competition as a Driver of Floral Divergence: An Experimental Test
Optimal foraging models of floral divergence predict that competition between two different types of pollinators will result in partitioning, increased assortative mating, and divergence of two floral phenotypes. We tested these predictions in a tropical plant-pollinator system using sexes of purple-throated carib hummingbirds (Anthracothorax jugularis) as the pollinators, red and yellow inflor...
متن کاملFemale Adelie Penguins Acquire Nest Material from Extrapair Males after Engaging in Extrapair Copulations
Females of a number of bird species occasionally have been recorded exchanging copulations directly for food or for access to food resources (Lack 1940, Brown 1967). For example, Wolf (1975) found that male Purple-throated Caribs (Eulampis jugularis) defend groups of flowers from conspecifics but allow females access in exchange for copulations. Similarly, in monogamous Red-billed Gulls (Larus ...
متن کاملMate choice and mate competition by a tropical hummingbird at a floral resource.
The influence of male territorial and foraging behaviours on female choice has received little attention in studies of resource-defence mating systems even though such male behaviours are thought to affect variation in their territory quality and mating success. Here we show that female purple-throated carib hummingbirds Eulampis jugularis preferred to mate with males that had high standing cro...
متن کاملField Metabolic Rate and Food Consumption of Two Sympatric Hummingbird Species in Southeastern Arizona
We compared the field metabolic rate (FMR) and behavior around sugar-water feeders of sympatric territorial and non-territorial hummingbirds in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona during July 1987 and 1989. The territorial species was the Blue-throated Hummingbird (Lampornis clemenciae; mean mass 8.77 g) and the non-territorial species the Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus ale...
